General notes

From the volume titled 'British Owned Iron and Steel Barques (II)'.

This image is from the A.D. Edwardes Collection of about 8,000 photographs, mostly of sailing ships from around the world, taken between about 1865 and 1920. Mounted in 91 albums, the photographs are arranged by country of ownership, with some special volumes such as 'Shipping at Port Adelaide' and 'South Australian outports'. Additional information, giving the history of the ships where known, has been provided by maritime historian, Ron Parsons.

Historical information

According to a researcher the wreck of the Lanoma was wrecked on the Chesil Beach, Portland Dorset 8th March 1888. She was owned by Thomas Boss Walker who also owned the Berean and Barossa. There is a resemblance to the Barossa. [iron barque, 700 tons, ON73710, 184.6 x 31.1 x 17.9. Built 1876 (6) SP Austin and Hunter, Sunderland. Owners: TB Walker, registered London. Wrecked on a voyage from Australia to England on Chesil Beach, near Portland Bill, England, in March 1888. The Captain and eleven others being lost. She struck at midnight in bad weather].
