Summary

The iron barque 'Ethel', 689 tons, at Hobart [iron 3 mast barque, 711 gross tons, ON68940, 177.4 x 30.7 x 18.5. Built 1876 (4) SP Austin and Hunter, Sunderland as 'Carmelo', owners H Gourlay and Co., registered Glasgow, about 1890 sold and renamed 'Ethel', owners: Fenwick, Stobart and Co, registered London. 1903 sold to Acties Bark Ethel (SA Sande) registered Flekkefjord, Norway and wrecked January 1904 at the bottom of Yorke Peninsula, SA.]

From the volume titled 'British Owned Iron and Steel Barques (I)'.

This image is from the A.D. Edwardes Collection of about 8,000 photographs, mostly of sailing ships from around the world, taken between about 1865 and 1920. Mounted in 91 albums, the photographs are arranged by country of ownership, with some special volumes such as 'Shipping at Port Adelaide' and 'South Australian outports'. Additional information, giving the history of the ships where known, has been provided by maritime historian, Ron Parsons.
