Summary

The iron barque 'Lakemba', 1174 tons, while named the 'Earl Rosebery' [iron barque, 1174 tons, ON90034. 216.0 x 35.1 x 21.2. Built 1885 (3) Russell and Co., Port Glasgow, as 'Earl Rosebery' for J Russell, registered Glasgow. c.1891 sold and renamed 'Lakemba' by P Denniston and Co. Abandoned about 350 miles south of South Africa in Lat. 38 degrees Long. 32 degrees in 1911. Crew rescued by the Norwegian barque 'Ketty' bound for Newcastle NSW from Buenos Aires. One of the ships owned by The Island Line / P. Denniston and Co., Glasgow.

This image is from the A.D. Edwardes Collection of about 8,000 photographs, mostly of sailing ships from around the world, taken between about 1865 and 1920. Mounted in 91 albums, the photographs are arranged by country of ownership, with some special volumes such as 'Shipping at Port Adelaide' and 'South Australian outports'. Additional information, giving the history of the ships where known, has been provided by maritime historian, Ron Parsons.
