General notes

One of the ships owned by J. Herron and Co., Liverpool.

This image is from the A.D. Edwardes Collection of about 8,000 photographs, mostly of sailing ships from around the world, taken between about 1865 and 1920. Mounted in 91 albums, the photographs are arranged by country of ownership, with some special volumes such as 'Shipping at Port Adelaide' and 'South Australian outports'. Additional information, giving the history of the ships where known, has been provided by maritime historian, Ron Parsons.

Historical information

According to Great Grandson of Captain Butler and researcher John Hebblewhite, the Lord Ripon was lauched from Grangemouth Dockyard, Alloa, Scotland in January 1982. Captain W.A.Butler. [GRT 2765 Net 2627 Length 96.92 m beam 13.15 m]. It is likely this image was created in Sydney Australia 1894. In December she arrived in Sydney 1896. Sailed from Sydney to London in 107 days with a cargo of wool. 1896 travelled from London to Sydney in 83 days. 1897 arrived in Sydney 8th January. 1898 the vessel was sold and renamed 'Nal'. She made fast passages and it looks like she was pushed too hard at times. She was launched again in January and was lost off Cape Horn in January 1922. [steel 4 mast barque, 2765 tons, ON99385, 318.0 x 43.2 x 24.5. Built 1892 (3) Grangemouth Dockyard Co. Alloa. Owners: Sailing Ship Lord Ripon Ltd. (J Harron and Co.) registered Liverpool. Sold 1898 to German owners and renamed 'Nal' after the war was allotted to the French who sold her to English buyers, and she was then sold to the free port of Dantzig, all without change of name. Abandoned in an apparently sinking condition off Cape Horn, January 16, 1922].
