Summary

The four masted steel barque 'Lord Ripon', 2765 tons, dismasted at Sydney [steel 4 mast barque, 2765 tons, ON99385, 318.0 x 43.2 x 24.5. Built 1892 (3) Grangemouth Dockyard Co. Alloa. Owners: Sailing Ship Lord Ripon Ltd. (J Harron and Co.) registered Liverpool. Sold 1898 to German owners and renamed 'Nal' after the war was allotted to the French who sold her to English buyers, and she was then sold to the free port of Dantzig, all without change of name. Abandoned in an apparently sinking condition off Cape Horn, January 16, 1922].

General notes

One of the ships owned by J. Herron and Co., Liverpool.

This image is from the A.D. Edwardes Collection of about 8,000 photographs, mostly of sailing ships from around the world, taken between about 1865 and 1920. Mounted in 91 albums, the photographs are arranged by country of ownership, with some special volumes such as 'Shipping at Port Adelaide' and 'South Australian outports'. Additional information, giving the history of the ships where known, has been provided by maritime historian, Ron Parsons.

The Lord Ripon (ship) was launched from Grangemouth Dockyard at Alloa Scotland January 1892 for J.A. Herron & Co. The master was W.A. Butler. The second master was J. Richard joining the vessl in late 1895. Captain Butler sailed with all his family on board. The vessel was sold in 1898 and re-named the Nal (ship). The vessel was lost in January 1922 being abandoned after springing a leak, assumed sunk off Barnfet Island, Cape Horn. Information supplied November 2010.
