The iron 4 masted barque 'Sokoto', 2262 tons, in an unidentified harbour [iron 4 mast barque, eventually, original ship rigged, 2262 tons, ON93741, 278.5 x 41.9 x 24.5. Built 1887 (8) Russell and Co. Port Glasgow. Owners: GM Steeves and J McGrindell, registered Liverpool. Became Norwegian 1910]. Norwegian owned from 1910 to 1916, then sold to Danish shipowner O. J. Eskildsen in May 1916. On 25 April 1917 she was sunk by German submarine U-58 off Scotland, when en route from Baltimore USA to Aarhus, Denmark carrying a cargo of superphosphates.

Owners: GN Gardiner and Co., registered Liverpool: 1897 J Joyce; 1899 sold German owners and renamed 'Magdalene' and in 1913 renamed 'Ophelia'. Broken up in Germany in 1923/4].


The 'Oweenee' at Port Adelaide
The steel 4 masted barque 'Oweenee', 2432 tons, at Port Adelaide [steel 4 mast barque, 2432 gross, ON100264, 309.0 x 42.0 x 24.6. Built 1891 (10) Richardson, Duck and Co. Stockton: Owners: Oweenee Ship Co. Ltd., registered Windsor, Nova Scotia, later Thames and Mersey Shipping Co: c.1916 sold and converted into full powered motorship and fitted as a petrol tanker and renamed 'Ortina Shell'].

Owners Crown SS Co. Ltd. (J Reid and Co) registered Belfast c.1902/3 Crown of Germany Ship Co. Potter Bros. registered London. In 1910 sold to Hamburg and renamed Fischbek. On her first voyage was wrecked in Le Maire Straits near Cape Horn, August 1910].

Owners: D McGillivray, registered Greenock in 1920 became the German owned 'Margretha'. During WW1 was taken by Portugese and renamed 'Graciosa' and was sunk in 1918 by a German submarine].

Owners: H Fernie and Sons, Liverpool (Liverpool Shipping Co.) registered Liverpool. Missing in 1905 on her passage from Bremerhaven to the Tyne. NB. There were two ships of this name in the fleet, the earlier one was built in 1881 and wrecked in 1884].

Owners: Bilbrough and Co. Registerd London. Sold c.1899 to German owners and renamed 'Alsterufer'. c.1913 'Suzanne Vinnen'. Torpedoed under the name 'Carrabin' q.v.] [steel hulled 4 mast barque built 1892 and named North Star, and sold to German owners and became Alster Rufer and then Susanne Vinnen. Taken over by British authorities on outbreak of WW1 and registered at London, with ON99085. This vessel was porpedoed Oct 1 1917, 10 miles south of Daunts Rock, without warning. There was no loss of life.]

Built 1877 (9) C Connell and Co., Glasgow. 271.5 x 39.3 x 23.4. Owners: W&A Brown, registered Glasgow, later A Brown, then c.1893 Andrew Weir and Co. Sold to Norway and eventually reduced to barque rig].

The 'Puritan' in an unidentified harbour
The steel 4 masted barque 'Puritan', 2361 tons, in an unidentified harbour steel 4 mast barque, 2361 gross, ON97591, 301.6 x 43.1 x 24.2. Built 1889 (12) J Reid and Co. Port Glasgow. Owners: Sir RW Cameron, registered Glasgow. Left Newcastle NSW with coal for San Francisco in 1911 and on June 17 sprang a leak. She was abandoned in a sinking condition on June 27, 1911. The Captain and a boat's crew reached Tahiti, another boat with three aboard was picked up by SS 'Talune', but a third boat with ten men on board was never seen again].

A number of of references to the ship, but nothing of importance are to found in 'The Coolie Ships and Oil Sailers' by Basil Lubbock].

Lawther and Son, reg. Belfast. Sold 1900 and renamed California by J. Edgar and Co. reg. Liverpool. Wrecked January 1913 when under tow from the Tyne to Rotterdam. Eight lives lost].

The steel 4 masted barque 'Hinemoa', 2283 tons, in an unidentified harbour. Also refer to print PRG 1373/27/94 [steel 4 mast barque 2283 gross tons. ON98591, 278.1 x 41.9 x 24.2 Built 1890 (11) Russell and Co. Greenock. Owners John Leslie, registered Glasgow. c.1915-6 to Liverpool owners and survived WW1. When first built was fitted with refrigerating machinery and made her maiden voyage to New Zealand. Was reputed to have been the first four mast barque to have been seen in the area. After this trip she was mainly employed in the Australian trade and made some smart passages. See:'White Wings' Vol. 1 which says she was purchased by Leslie in 1916 - she was SOLD about that time by Leslie. 'Last of the Windjammers'. Vol. 11 dwells upon her alleged bad luck. 'Colonial Clippers' makes brief mention of the ship].

Also refer to print PRG 1373/27/18 [possibly also known as the 'Meta Seeger' owned in Bremen] [wooden barque. 1047 tons. ON29463. 191.5 x 34.8 x 22.0. Built 1862 (9) A Stephen and Sons. Dundee. Owners A Stephen and Sons, registered Dundee. c.1882 sold to Bremen and renamed Meta Seeger. Noted as being stranded in 1887]. According to a researcher the captain of this ship was Richard H Cary - who came from the fishing village of Mousehole in Cornwall England. He was one of five brothers - all were ships captains who spent time in Australian waters. Richard was the only one of the brothers who did not die at sea.
