The composite barque 'Berean', 542 tons, in Langesund on the southeast coast of Norway. [Composite barque, 542 tons. ON60996, 160.5 x 30.2 x 17.2 Built 1869 (8) W Pile and Co. Sunderland. Owners TB Walker registered London sold c.1896 Norwegian owners. In 1910 suffered severe damage after a collision with a steamer in the Thames and sunk. Raised and converted into a hulk and subsequently broken up. Bits of her hull are on display in the Langesund sailors' club. Under the British flag was well known in the Tasmanian trades.]

Reported missing in 1891 when bound for San Francisco (Miramar Ship Index). Reference to 'Minnyhive of Glasgow. John Webster, Master, burthen 1296 tons from the port of Sharpness to Sydney, NSW, 6 June 1888 (Mariners and ships in Australian waters) [iron barque, 1348 tons, ON90049. 239.5 x 36.2 x 21.5. Built 1885 (5) R Duncan and Co., Port Glasgow. Owners: TC Guthrie, registered Glasgow. Missing. On a voyage from Swansea to San Francisco with coal she was spoken in the North Atlantic 20 August 1891 and not seen again].

Owners: EC Friend and Co., registered Liverpool. c.1898 Newark Shipping Co.; c.1904 Lever Bros., c.1905 to Norway without change of name. 1916 renamed 'Effendi', under Norwegian flag: in 1924 became the Finnish 'Karhu', Feb. 1926 to G. Erikson, and reverts to original name 'Lalla Rookh' and broken up in 1928].

(White Star Line), registered Liverpool, sold 1894 to Danish owners without change of name. Sold 1909 to Italian owners without change of name. Converted into a lightship in the River Plate in 1910 and in the 1950s still engaged in the same capacity].

Owners Battersby and Gavin, registered Liverpool. c.1890 sold to German owners, rigged down to a barque and renamed 'Ocean' and registered at Hamburg.] (NB highly unlikely was barque rigged as 'Amyone' and the photograph is of her as 'Ocean'.).


The 'Strathdon' under sail
The steel barque 'Strathdon', 2093 tons, under sail [steel barque, 2093 tons, ON90126, 282.8 x 40.5 x 23.6. Built 1885 (5) Harland and Wolff, Belfast, as 'Queen's Island' for S Lawther, registered Belfast, sold to George Thompson and Co., 1890 and renamed 'Strathdon' registered Aberdeen. Sold and renamed 'Gers' and owned by AD Bordes and broken up in 1924. NB. There were two sailing ships of this name operated by the Aberdeen White Star Line, the earlier vessel was built in 1860 - do not confuse - note by Parsons. Under the name 'Strathdon' was well known in the Australian cargo trade].

Owners T Skinner and Co. registered Glasgow. Wrecked at Warrnambool Victoria January 15, 1888 when she struck while entering in charge of a pilot. Efforts to save the vessel proved useless. She was inward with a cargo of cement for the new breakwater].

Subsequently became 'Henriette', then 'Vittoria', then 'Sarita', and finally 'Freixas' and converted to a steamship] [829 gross tons, 798 net tons. Built and owned by Dixon Irwin of Liverpool. Dixon Irwin later formed the firm, Dixon Irwin and Co. Letterewe was sold to J Dowie and Co. and with this company sailed for many years to Australia as one of the ships of the Black Star Line. In 1882 Letterewe was stranded on the coast of Fife after making a very fast trip from India to Dundee with a cargo of jute. She was salvaged and in 1910, sold, apparently becoming a hulk in a South American port. During the first world war, because of a general shortage of ships, Letterewe was fitted with a steam engine. She sailed under various names: 'Henriette', later 'Vittoria' and in the early 1920's, 'Sarita;, then 'Freixas I'. In 1955 she was still afloat as a steam ship. 'Astur', registered in Gijon, Spain].

Wrecked Sept. 3, 1892, Tail o'bank, at the commencement of her voyage from Glasgow towards Sydney and Newcastle, with a general cargo that included gunpowder.]
