Summary

The iron barque 'Lalla Rookh', 841 tons, in an unidentified port [formerly 'Effendi'] [see 'Karhu'] [iron 3 mast barque, 841 tons, ON74542. 196.3 x 31.9 x 19.7. Built 1876 (7) R & J Evans and Co., Liverpool. Owners: EC Friend and Co., registered Liverpool. c.1898 Newark Shipping Co.; c.1904 Lever Bros., c.1905 to Norway without change of name. 1916 renamed 'Effendi', under Norwegian flag: in 1924 became the Finnish 'Karhu', Feb. 1926 to G. Erikson, and reverts to original name 'Lalla Rookh' and broken up in 1928].

From the volume titled 'British Owned Iron and Steel Barques (III)'.

This image is from the A.D. Edwardes Collection of about 8,000 photographs, mostly of sailing ships from around the world, taken between about 1865 and 1920. Mounted in 91 albums, the photographs are arranged by country of ownership, with some special volumes such as 'Shipping at Port Adelaide' and 'South Australian outports'. Additional information, giving the history of the ships where known, has been provided by maritime historian, Ron Parsons.
