Summary

[General description] Rundle Street is thronged with people, both in the street and on the balconies. They are cheering on the marching soldiers who can barely be seen in the crowd, their shouldered rifles marking their progress. The Beehive corner is prominent on the left, the corner premises being occupied by H. Sewell, Nurseryman. T.A. Cook, Fruiterer is in the Waterhouse building on the right. [On back of photograph] 'South African War 1899-1902 / Departure of the first South Australian Contingent / October 31, 1899 / At intersection of Rundle and King William Streets / Reproduced in Chronicle for November 4th, 1899'.
