Historical information

Brothers Samuel Bell Labatt (1858-1944) and John Bagot Labatt (1861-1928) were the two middle sons of Dublin-born George Augustus Labatt (1817-1895), a prominent Adelaide barrister, and his wife Anna Frances (née Bagot, 1827-1910), who was the daughter of Irish-born South Australian pastoralist Charles Hervey Bagot. The Labatts' residence was in Brougham Place, North Adelaide. When this studio portrait was taken by Frazer Smith Crawford in the mid 1860s, the various Labatt and Bagot families of North Adelaide were among the city's wealthiest and most influential. This portrait of the two young brothers is possibly unrecorded. Both John Bagot Labatt and Samuel Bell Labatt would remain North Adelaide residents for their entire lives. John Bagot became a prominent civil engineer and served as Deputy Commissioner of the South Australian Harbours Board, while Samuel Bell followed in his father's footsteps, entering the legal profession and enjoying a successful career as a solicitor.
