Historical information

The Maurice Farman Shorthorn planes were built from 1913 and were used as training aircraft by several countries, including the Australian Flying Corps. In 1919 four of these planes were sold to Robert Graham Carey, an early Australian aviator, the first holder of an Australian commercial flying permit, and the owner of the Melbourne Air Service which operated from Port Melbourne. He also used the air service for advertising as a 'Message from the Cloud', including Velvet soap. [See 'A message from the clouds' by Desmond Martin and Bertha Carey for further details.] The Ariel bikes (one of which is featured in the first image) were built in Footscray, Victoria, from around 1910.
