Historical information

Charles Hervey Bagot (1788-1880), known as Captain Bagot, was a South Australian soldier, pastoralist, mine owner and parliamentarian. He was born at Nurney, County Kildare, Ireland on 17 April 1788, youngest son of Christopher Bagot and his wife Elizabeth (nee Clibborn). Her served with the 87th Regiment in South America, Cape Colony and India, and was promoted to captain in 1815. He married Mary MacCarthy in 1815, and retired from the army in 1819, returning to Ireland to work as a land agent. He migrated to South Australia with his wife and five children to give his family more opportunities, arrived at Port Adelaide in December 1840. He worked land on the River Light which he named Koonunga. In 1842 his youngest son, Charles Samuel, discovered copper on what became the Kapunda mine, which Bagot controlled until 1857. He was appointed as member of the South Australian Legislative Council on 1 July 1844, and was elected to the seat of Light on 12 July 1851, resigning in July 1853, and held a seat in the Legislative Council in 1857-1859. With his wife he built Nurney House at North Adelaide, where he died on 29 July 1880.
