Group portrait, thought to be trainee teachers and staff, at the Adelaide Observation School, Currie Street. Beatrice Alice Moulds (later Rother) is in the back row, extreme right. One of the teachers may be Mr. Adey. The school principal, John Fairweather, is seated in the centre, eighth from the left, in the second row from the front.

Historical information

John Fairweather, son of Henry Howell Fairweather and Susan Ellen Treloar Hill, was a teacher with a career spanning nearly 60 years, from the 1870s to 1930. Born on 8 December 1860 at Langhorne's Creek, he attended Goolwa State [Primary] School and stayed on as a pupil teacher until 1876 before moving to the counterpart position in the Grote Street School. After receiving formal training in 1881, John Fairweather took up teaching posts as: Assistant at Norwood (1882-1885); Head at Port Wakefield (1885-1892); Head at Wallaroo (1892-1894); Head at Glanville and East Adelaide [St. Peters] (1894-1906); Head at Norwood (1907); and Head of the Observation and Practice School, Currie Street from 1 January 1908 to 31 December 1912, after being selected by Thomas Price, Labor Premier (1905-1909). He was President of the SA Public School Teachers' Union for a year from June 1908, Inspector of [State Primary] Schools, 1 January 1913 to 1927, and Staff Inspector, 1927 until his retirement in 1930. John Fairweather married Sarah Martha Armstrong ('Minnie'), on 23 May 1885 at St. Paul's, Adelaide, and together they had five children: Frank Henry (born and died 1886), William Rowland (1887-192), Winifred Mary ('Mollie') (1889-1972), Dorothy May (1893-1984), and Marjorie Armstrong (1895-1950).
