Maynard Johnson Cole, born 6 July 1878, enlisted on 4 September 1917 in the Army Medical Corps, 50th Battalion, and left Australia on 5 June 1918 from Sydney aboard the 'Orontes'. His father, William James Cole, was a Labor MP in the South Australian Parliament, and supported two conscription referenda.
