General notes

A composite of seven portraits of men who superintended the construction of the telegraph line from Port Lincoln via Eucla to Albany published in the Observer newspaper 4 December 1909, page 28. They are (2) John Knuckey, (3) McMinn, (4) Alfred Woods, (5) Frank Marchant (6) and (7) Carey brothers of Western Australia. (One of Richard Knuckey has been removed. See B 7232). The composite may be viewed by doing a number search on B 7233.

This portrait is described in the Observer newspaper as Joseph McMinn but is most likely William McMinn or his brother Gilbert Rotherdale McMinn. Both were surveyors on the Overland Telegraph Line. Their father Joseph McMinn was a bank manager in County Down, Ireland. He died before his wife Martha took their eight children from Ireland to South Australia.
