Stormy sea beside Wallaroo jetty, 10 cm x 20.4 cm on mount 18.2 cm x 30.4 cm with 'REG. 103' at bottom left of image and label on mount at bottom left 'E. Duryea, Wallaroo, S.A.' On verso - handwritten caption, partly illegible: 'this is while storm was raging following the No.1 / -- 4.5.6. --------------- left / moorings came ashore --------- Gale of wind.'

Historical information

Edwin Duryea was born at Norwood in May 1857, second child of photographer Townsend Duryea and second wife Elizabeth Murray Smith. Worked with his father, then set up photographic studio at Moonta 1883. By 1900 he had studio in Elizabeth Street, Wallaroo, then at Wildman Street in same town from 1907-1914. Returned to Adelaide and had studio near Gouger Street till 1924, then another in Grote Street. Died in August 1945 aged 88.
