Historical information

Lithograph based on Samuel Calvert's watercolour 'A view of Adelaide' (original oval shape) held in collection of Art Gallery of SA. The two goats on the bank of the Torrens appear instead of an Aboriginal family; other Aboriginal figures are shown close to Calvert's original work. Issued as free supplement on April 1850 issue of 'The Monthly Almanac and Illustrated Commentator' and advertised in 'The Mercury and South Australian Sporting Chronicle' as being 'Taken from an entirely new point of view, embracing the principal edifices, the Torrens, Park Lands, and picturesque Mountain Scenery. The Engraving (sic) will be upon fine Drawing Paper, 18 inches by 12, and forming a Supplement to the Almanac can be transmitted free of postage to any part of the world. Price to non-subscribers 2s 6d.'
