Summary

'Adelaide South Australia from West end of Hindley Street - November 1849', lithograph printed on paper from two stones. Lithograph shows it had been folded and later flattened. Inscription on other versions of this work also has, in lower left, 'J.B. Austin Jun.r Del.t' which is obscured by mount here.

Engravings of image reproduced in 'Illustrated London News' 24 August 1850, p.169, and 'A Visit to Australia and its Gold Regions' 1853, p. 35. A drawing for the work, signed and dated 1849, held by Art Gallery of SA. Another print in AGSA collection is hand-coloured. This view of Adelaide criticised in press for showing backviews of houses. View was lithographed and published in Adelaide, possibly by Penman and Galbraith.
