General notes

The Hugh Edgar shown was born in Adelaide in 1858 and died at Cudlee Creek (where he was working as a mason on the Chain of Ponds works) in 1916. He was the son of John (known as 'McPherson') Edgar, a Scot from Dumfries who arrived aged 20 on the 'Bolton' (sailing from London) in 1848, and Mary Ann McCorkle. Hugh went to school with Charles Winneke, later the surveyor, and gave up an apprenticeship to accompany Winneke on a number of trips to the north - Hugh specialising in care of the animals. Hugh Edgar was asked to accompany the Horn Expedition as [the chief?] cameleer. His fatherJohn Edgar (who by then owned properties in Halifax St) died in 1893. Hugh married Jane Marr from North Berwick, Scotland.
