Summary

[General description] This view shows buildings of the Quarantine Station which are surrounded by a tall galvanised iron fence, separating them from the open land also part of the facility. Perfectly located at the mouth of the Port River it was completely isolated from the mainland and for many migrants the Quarantine Station was their first experience of Australia. In operation since 1855, it was run by the South Australian government (until 1909) and could be reached only by launch or barge, and had to provide its own facilities (including power, water and sewerage). It could accommodate up to 200 people and had its own hospital and cemetery. [On back of photograph] 'Quarantine Station, Torrens Island / 1879-86'.
