On the first page : 'Adelaide, June 1st, 1898. Dear Mr Kay, on this the first day of your fortieth year of continuous service in connection with the Public Library, Museum, and Art Gallery of South Australia, we, your fellow officers in the associated departments, desire to offer to you our heartiest congratulations on the attainment of this stage in your long and honourable career. We are not, however, content with merely congratulating you upon the exceptional duration of your service, we desire also to assure you of our deep respect and esteem, and as an expression of these sentiments, we beg your acceptance of this album. We trust that, whilst serving as a memento of an interesting anniversary, it may be also valued as a token of our personal good will. It remains for us only to express the hope that, ten years hence, we may be able to renew these congratulations and good wishes, when you shall have reached the jubilee of your public service. With all good wishes for your health and happiness, we remain, Dear Mr. Kay, very sincerely your fellow officers.'
