Summary

[General description] The 'Aurora' wooden steam yacht at Melbourne. Launched in 1876 she was built as a sealer for the Dundee fleet with reinforced hull to withstand ice. She was acquired for Douglas Mawson's 1911-14 Australasian Antarctic Expedition, later used by Sir Ernest Shackleton's 1914-17 Trans-Antarctic Expedition. Ultimately went missing with crew of 21 in 1917 carrying a cargo of coal from Newcastle, New South Wales to Iquique, Chile.
