Summary

Travellers' Rest Hotel, Houghton was licensed in 1842. It had a monopoly of passing trade for fifteen years but lost much of it when a road by-passed Houghton in 1857. Houghton derived its name from Houghton Le Spring in Durham and was part of a special survey granted to John Barton Hack in 1839. By 1842 the village had its first inn, then later a church, school and post office. The photograph shows the hotel with travellers standing in shade nearby. A horse trough and a motor bus (registration 1045) stand outside the hotel
