Summary

A 12 foot auto header in operation in a barley field on the Abattoirs property near Northfield in 1937. The name on the side of the header is KV McKay Pty. Ltd. Sunshine. Hugh Victor McKay was Australia's leading industrialist in the early 20th century. He invented a machine that collected the straw as well as the grain heads. This was the beginning of the combine harvester. The HV McKay Harvester Works at Sunshine in Victoria turned out a near complete range of farm equipment including engines and tillage machinery. The patent for the auto header was taken out in 1923 and the first production models were released in 1924.
