View of a chimney at the smelters in Wallaroo, jetty is in the background. Known as 'Hughes Chimney Stack' the chimney was erected in 1861 and named after Sir Walter Watson Hughes, upon whose Moonta pastoral lease copper was discovered. Hughes was also co-founder of the University of Adelaide.

Half-plate glass negative of two locomotives near a Wallaroo and Moonta Mining and Smelting Company bulding, Wallaroo. The locomotive on the left built by Dübs & Co of Glasgow in 1878 was originally Locomotive No.1 on the Glenelg & South Coast Tramway. The locomotive on the right, saddle tank locomotive No.12, was built by Hudswell, Clarke and Company Limited of Leeds, England.

Wallaroo Smelting Works

[General description] This view was taken looking back to the shore from the jetty. The smelting works is an extensive complex of buildings with numerous chimneys. The smelters began operation in 1861 and were closed in 1923. The largest chimney stack on the extreme right is Hughes' Stack which still stands today (2012). [General description] This view was taken looking back to the shore, probably from the jetty, to take in part of the smelting works. Various buildings and structures are scattered amongst the smoking chimney stacks. In the centre the distant Presbyterian Church is partially obscured by smoke. [General description] View of the Roman Catholic Church, Wallaroo, silhouetted against the sky. This church was consecrated on the 15th December, 1867 by the Very Reverend J. Smth, V.G. who afterwards preached a sermon. (See South Australian Register, Saturday 14 December 1867, page 1).

[General description] The Public School, Wallaroo, built in 1877, is a long building with front facing gabled ends, featuring triple arched windows. The roof features decorative ventilators. Children were schooled in various private schools before this time.

Fire Brigade Station, Wallaroo

[General description] This fire station was established by the South Australian Fire Brigade on 20 December 1897. The building is in the Federation style featuring red bricks and decorative carved wood verandah supports. A white picket fence runs along the front of the station. Main Street, Wallaroo is a port town and part of South Australia's Copper Triangle. This photograph depicts a prosperous country town with the main street full of parked cars and people gathering to chat in front of the various shops and businesses. The road leads to the sea which can be seen in the distance.

The two storey Eland Bonded Store, built in 1864 and trading in tea, wine, soap and general commodities is prominent.
