Public Library

Public Library, North Terrace was opened in 1884 and housed not only the Public Library but also the Museum and Art Gallery. The library employed three staff and held 23,000 books. The building is French Renaissance in style with a mansard roof. The walls are constructed of brick with Sydney freestone facings with decorations in a darker shade of Manoora stone.

University of Adelaide showing the Mitchell Building which was erected between 1879-1881. It was designed by Irish architect William McMinn and built by Brown and Thompson. It displays an example of Gothic Revival architecture with its Sydney white stone and freestone from Tea Tree Gully.

War Memorial Unveiling

[General description] A large group of soldiers and civilians attend the ceremony at the new National War Memorial, Adelaide, on Anzac day, 1931. The police greys are in attendance (bottom left corner) and part of Government House can be glimpsed amongst the trees in the background. The Memorial was designed by Walter Bagot and Louis Laybourne-Smith (of the firm Woods Bagot) and built by Tillett and Son. The detail of the marble angel and group of bronze figures was the work of Sydney sculptor George Rayner Hoff. Miniature train at the Zoological Gardens, Adelaide, South Australia. This locomotive, powered by a petrol engine, was built by H.V. McKay of Sunshine, Victoria in 1925. He built a similar locomotive for Sydney's Taronga Park Zoo [See B 61614 for another view of the locomotive]. The train is carrying lots of children. Children can be seen in the background having an elephant ride around the circular track

SS "Dundula" built in 1920 for the Adelaide Steamship Company Limited. Gross tonnage is 3344, 1936 net. Triple expansion engine = 520 nhp. Built as a cargo vessel at the Commonwealth Naval Dockyard at Cockatoo Island, Sydney for the Australian Government Line. Sold in 1925 to Adelaide Steamship Company Limited. Sold as scrap in February 1953.

The "Momba" ship, 3021 gross tons, steel motorship built by Burmeister and Wain, Copenhagen Adelaide Steamship Cpmpany Limited. Sold in 1954 to buyers at Wellington, New Zealand and renamed "Ken Waihi". Was arrested in Sydney April 29th 1955 for debt with the crew being repatriated on May 9th and the vessel being sold in September to Italian interests and was renamed "Due Golfl". Ship was scrapped in 1972.

S.S. "Karoola"

S.S. "Karoola"

S.S. "Karoola" steel twin screw steamer built in Belfast in 1909 for voyages between Port Adelaide and Fremantle. Requisitioned during WW1 as a troopship, hospital ship. Returned to passenger service in 1919. Laid up in Sydney in 1936.

Model of Le Geographe. The model was probably made by Lionel S. Rogers, a ship model-maker in Hobart. See D 7917(Misc) Le Geographe was the ship of Baudin's Expedition of 1802. The model was made for Mr Sidney Wilcox of North Adelaide from details supplied by the French Department of Marine at Rouen, through the French Sub-Consul, Hobart, Tasmania and the French Consul General, Sydney, NSW.

H.M.S. Curacoa

H.M.S. Curacoa in 1890. She left port in the United Kingdom on April1, 1889 and travelled to Perth, Albany, Adelaide, Launceston, Melbourne, Sydney, Wellington, Auckland, Christchurch/Lyttleton. She was sent to the Ellice Islands in 1892 to make a formal declaration that the islands were a British Protectorate. She later visited Madeira.

The "Samuel Plimsoll" visited South Australia in 1894. She was an iron built wool clipper registered in Aberdeen. Her fastest voyage was from Sydney to the Bishop's Rock Lighhouse in 68 days

The "Earl of Dunmore" was a steel four masted steel barque scuttled at Sydney to extinguish a fire. She was built at Greenock in 1891. She visited South Australia in 1896 and 1898

The 'Aristides'

The 'Aristides'

[General description] The 'Aristides' at Sydney. She was a three masted ship rigged iron vessel, 1721 tons, built in Aberdeen, launched in 1876. She was said to be the flagship of the Aberdeen White Star line- a well known clipper on the Australia trade, carrying cargo and passengers. On 28th May 1903 she vanished on a voyage from Caleta Buena, Chile to San Francisco with a cargo of nitrate of soda. See B 12017 for a different view.

[General description] The "Fanny Fisher" ship. Built in 1847 by John Nicholson, Manning River, N.S.W. for Henry Fisher of Sydney. She is a wooden three masted barque, named after Mr. Fisher's daughter. She is shown here with her courses partially furled.

[General description] The 'Star of Peace' under sail. She is a wooden ship, 1114 tons, ON6907, 215.2 x 35.9 x 22.5, built 1855 Walter Hood and Co. Aberdeen. Owners: White Star Line (usually identified as 'The Aberdeen' White Star Line, and operated by George Thompson and Co.) Sold 1880 to Richard Grice and John Benn (and registered at Melbourne.) By this time, rigged down to a barque. July 1884 sold to Burns, Philp and Co. Ltd., Sydney and converted to a hulk and stationed at Thursday Island where the vessel was broken up in 1894/5. Well known in the Australian passenger trades before sale to Australian owners and general cargo work. [On back of photograph] 'Visited South Australia in 1857, 1875 and 1877 / Vide Arch. 908'

H.M.S. Galatea. The iron ship Galatea, 1753 tons was sailing from Hamburg for Sydney and was abandoned by her crew when she ran aground. Newspapers of the time reported that her cargo was looted by French trawlers. The photograph states "HMSS Frigate "Galatea". Captain HRH Duke of Edinburgh KG"

The "Illawarra" sailing ship. [S.S.I llawarra, was built by Dobie and Co. at Govan Shipyards on the Clyde River, Glasgow, Scotland. The vessel was launched in October 1881, for owners Devitt and Moore. The vessel was used for immigration, sailing from London, clearing customs at Plymouth, and berthing in Port Jackson, Sydney. Assigned the official British Reg. No. 85076 and signal WFKT. Employed in the Australian passenger trade.]

S. S. "Austral " which visited South Australian frequently in the late nineteenth century. She was a steel screw steamer of 1000 horse power. She was built in Glasgow in 1881. She made many journeys to the Semaphore in South Australia from London and Sydney. She was a troopship for the Boer War

Edward Lakovsky

Edward Lakovsky

No.1974 Private Edward Lakovsky, 10th Battalion, was born in Uzova, South Russia, the son of Thomas and Pasha nee Shaeffer, before moving to Sydney and Broken Hill. Edward was a labourer at the time of his attestation on 14 January 1915 in Oaklands, South Australia, and served in the Middle East before being discharged on medical grounds. He returned to Australia aboard the Wiltshire on 31 of June 1915. He married Hilda Hooper in Melbourne on 15 December 1917. Edward died in Victoria in 1977.

Service number 2175 Percival Thomas Holland, 1st Australian Imperial Force. He was the son of Mathew Holland and Louisa Heyer. Born 25 October 1894 in Scott Creek SA. Died in 1973, registered in St Leonards district NSW. He enlisted in the AIF on 12 February 1915. Service Number: 2175, rank: Private, 10 Infantry Battalion. Embarked on 23 June 1915 from Adelaide on board the HMAT Borda A30. Moved to Sydney after the war.

WHYALLA: A dirt road with a partly obscured railway crossing leading towards the shipyards at Whyalla where a large crane is erected. According to a researcher, it is a 150 ton capacity Giant Cantilever, Hammerhead crane by Clyde Engineering, Sydney 1941-3 Original steelwork by BHP Newcastle lost at sea ca.1942. Replacement steelwork provided by Goninan, Newcastle ca.1942. Dismantled mid 1980s.
