[General description] This is a compilation of small portraits of the House of Assembly Members for the 27th Parliament, elected 1930.

Concentration Camp

Concentration Camp

Concentration camp for civil prisoners of war on Torrens Island. Conditions were harsh in the camp with Captain GE Hawkes abusing and ill treating the internees. Following two courts of inquiry the camp was closed in 1915. To add to the harsh conditions the internees, housed in tents, had to provide their own food. Despite these hardships they managed to organise cultural events. After the camp was closed in 1915 the internees were transferred to Sydney. This photograph shows row upon row of tents behind a fence.

The tug Moree on the road near Ashbourne January 16, 1962. The "Moree" was salvaged from the Coorong September, 27, 1961 after running aground. Her home port was Sydney.

McMahon's Hotel Centralia, North Terrace, Adelaide

McMahon's Hotel Centralia, North Terrace west, 17 August 1941. The left side is 57 yds. east of Fenn Place. Frontage (including the adjoining building with three shuttered windows): 24 yards. The Hotel Centralia was formerly called the Black Swan and Sydney Hotel. The hotel was remodelled in 1940. Compare this photograph with B 10400. Mrs Mary Elizabeth McMahon held the licence with Mr Thomas F McMahon from 1941 until 1943.

North Terrace, East c.1883. (compare with B13423). The Black Swan Hotel in approximately 1883. It was also known as Sydney Hotel amd Hotel Centralia and stood at number 65 North Terrace, west of Morphett Street

Rundle Street, north side. Charles Birks Department Store dominates the north side of Rundle Street. This three storey shop had an additional two storeys and a canopy over the entrance added on the western end in 1920. This store was merged with the Sydney store of David Jones in 1953.

Gilbert Place

Gilbert Place

Gilbert Place. These premises show alterations undertaken in 1934 by architect Albert Langhans for Leo Buring and Sobel vignerons. The building became known as Quelltaler House. See B 6463 for photo taken early in 1934 before changes. Leo Buring was born in South Australia on 7th October 1876 to German immigrants Theodor Gustav Hermann Buring and Henriette Friedricke Louisa Lina Dohrenwendt. He established Ye Old Crusty Cellar in Sydney where special vintages were stored in casks and bottles and where many distinguished guests were entertained. Possibly Quelltaler House was built for this purpose in Adelaide.

Wakefield Street

Wakefield Street

Wakefield Street, south side, May 1927, St. Francis Xaviers Cathedral. Construction began in 1856. The Cathedral was further expanded to include a bell tower which was opened by Archbishop Spence in April 1926. The bell used in the tower is the Murphy Bell of 1867 and it is surrounded by thirteen other bells, seven of these date back to 1881 and were previously in St Mary's Cathedral in Sydney. When this photograph was taken in May 1927 the second stage of building had just been completed.

Halifax Street, Adelaide, north side, taken on April 8th, 1925, and featuring Slatters' boot factory, soon after its completion. On the left is Surflen Street, and Sydney Place is towards the right. The frontage of the building is 47.5 yards, and its left side is 13.5 yards east of Surflen Street. See B 6715 for the 1933-4 enlagement of the factory.
