Summary

Wakefield Street, south side, May 1927, St. Francis Xaviers Cathedral. Construction began in 1856. The Cathedral was further expanded to include a bell tower which was opened by Archbishop Spence in April 1926. The bell used in the tower is the Murphy Bell of 1867 and it is surrounded by thirteen other bells, seven of these date back to 1881 and were previously in St Mary's Cathedral in Sydney. When this photograph was taken in May 1927 the second stage of building had just been completed.
