The 'Sobraon' at West Circular Quay, Sydney

The composite ship 'Sobraon', 2131 tons, at West Circular Quay, Sydney [composite ship, 2131 tons, ON54680. 272.0 x 40.0 x 27.0. Built 1866 (4) Hall, Russell and Co., Aberdeen. Owners: Lowther, Maxton and Co., registered London. c.1870 Devitt and Moore: 1892 NSW Government; 1911 Federal Government for Naval Training ship and renamed 'HMAS Tingira'. Sold out of the service in 1928, it was reported she was to be broken up, but in 1934 she was reported to be in use as a 'rest home for out of work boys'. In 1937 sold for conversion to a museum but the buyer went bankrupt and the vessel passed to Mr. W Ford, Berry's Bay, North Sydney and was finally demolished in WW2. There seems to be no foundation for the story that the vessel was laid down as a auxiliary steamer for the Black Ball Line. Even before she was purchased by Devitt and Moore whenever she loaded on the Australian berth she was under charter to that firm. Her first owners were in the China tea trade. claimed to have been the largest composite ship built. The ship was named after a decisive battle in the Sutlij war of 1846. Accommodation was for 90 first and 40 second class passengers. Her first trip to Australia was in 1866 when she made the trip to Sydney in 75 days. For a description of a passage made in 1882 see SB Vol. XVII (New Series) Jan. 1954 page 4 et seq.] [Tingira = native term for The Open Sea. While under this name was employed as a training ship for boy entries to RAN and was moored usually in Rose Bay, Sydney. 1914-1928].

Japanese midget submarine on display

Japanese midget submarine on display

Produced from a glass plate negative (8 x 11 cm) many of which were taken by Orlando Hutchinson, this image features one of three Japanses midget submarines that were involved in an attack on Sydney Harbour on the night of 31 May to 1 June 1942. Two of the submarines were captured, while a third submarine may have left the harbour and its whereabouts were unknown until 2006, when a submarine, possibly the third midget submarine, was discovered about five kilometres off the NSW coast. The two captured submarines were recovered and examined, with parts from each put together to form a composite vessel. The submarine in this photograph was made up from parts of the two retrieved submarines, and it toured parts of Australia to "raise war bonds and boost morale". The photograph may have been taken in Sydney at the start or finish of the tour. See the article 'Japanese Midget Submarine Attack on Sydney Harbour' by John Perryman on the Royal Australian Navy website for more details about the submarines and the attack on Sydney Harbour.

The 'Samuel Plimsoll' at Sydney

The 'Samuel Plimsoll' at Sydney

The iron ship 'Samuel Plimsoll', 1444 tons, at Sydney [iron ship, 1510 tons, ON65097, 241.3 x 30.0 x 23.1. Built 1873 (9) Walter Hood and Co., Aberdeen: owners George Thompson and Co., registered Aberdeen. Sold 1899. Dismasted in 1902 on a voyage to Port Chalmers and sold for use as a coal hulk was stationed in Fremantle. After many years service as a coal hulk, she was scuttled. Named for the British politician who strove to improve the conditions of seamen. His efforts saw the introduction of a load line, or mark, to show that the vessel should not be loaded beyond a certain depth - commonly called the 'Plimsoll Mark'. Well known in the Australian passenger trades and made some voyages to New Zealand] The ship left Melbourne pm 9th November, 1898, bound for London around the Horn. Two days out on the 11th, she encountered increasing WSW winds, which caused the vessel to roll suddenly to port, breaking off the foretopmast and all it's rigging, which was cut away from over the ship's side. The vessel proceeded North to Sydney, where she was towed in through the heads by the steam tug 'Champion' at 6 am, Thursday 17th November, 1898. She anchored in Neutral Bay. [Source - Sydney Morning Herald, 18 November 1902.] She was subsequently acquired in 1903 by J. & A. Brown, coal merchants, of Newcastle, NSW, converted to a coal hulk and towed to Albany, W.A. by S.S 'Duckenfield'. Bought in January 1922 by McIlwraith, Mc Eacharn & Co. & registered in Fremantle, she sank in Fremantle Harbour as a result of a collision with British India's 'Dalgoma' on June 18, 1945 and later raised in sections with the pieces being dumped on the wreck site of the 'Lygnern', Beagle Rocks, to the south of the South Mole (entrance breakwater), Fremantle.
