Sir Thomas Fowell Buxton took up the post as Governor in October 1895, bringing with him five servants: John Chilvers, aged 23 (first footman), John Fidgett, aged 20(?) (footman), Ellen Crowe, aged 68 (nurse), Lina Merlach, aged 44 (lady's maid) and Emily Davey, aged 28 (lady's maid?). John Chilvers was born in Norfolk, England in 1871; and returned to London on the 'Bungaree' on 2 August 1897, along with Emily Davey, whom he married on their arrival in England.
