Johanne Caroline Mathilde Schuttloffel
Johanne Caroline Mathilde Schuttloffel, nee Leopold, daughter of Johann Carl (Karl) Friedrich Leopold and Luise Caroline Leopold, nee Preller, was born at Bethany, South Australia, on 8 June 1847. She married Johann Friedrich Schuttloffel.

Johann Carl (Karl) Friedrich Leopold and Johanne Luise Caroline Leopold, nee Preller, departed Hamburg, Germany on 25 March 1841 onboard the ship the "Skjold" with five children, one of whom died at sea. They arrived in South Australia on 28 October 1841 and settled at Bethany.

Johann Carl (Karl) Friedrich Leopold and family members - probably two of his sons and a grandson. The Leopolds came to South Australia from Germany in 1841 on board the ship the "Skjold" and settled in Bethany.


Philip Levi
Philip Levi, early settler and pastoralist of South Australia. He was an influential businessman, ran sheep and cattle and was one of the founders of the Adelaide Club. He purchased Vale House, now in the suburb of Vale Park and also lived in Mitcham. He had a common law wife. The 'Advertiser' of 25 May 1898 noted that "by an inadvertence it was stated that the late Mr Philip Levi died unmarried. This is incorrect." He had eleven children. The family lived in Mitcham and Vale Park. He was buried in the Jewish section of West Terrace Cemetery.


Philip Levi
Philip Levi, pioneer colonist arrived in South Australia in 1838 and quickly became a successful pastoralist, businessman and a founder of the Adelaide Club. He bought Vale House (now in Vale Park) which became the centre of Adelaide social life. He was a good raconteur, full of reminiscences and shrewd experiences. He always helped those in need. He had remarkable energy and financial ability. His properties eventually ran 70,000 sheep and 30,000 cattle. He remained unmarried and was buried in the Jewish section of West Terrace Cemetery.

James William Lewis
James William Lewis was Postmaster General in South Australia for 24 years and retired in 1870. He was also Justice of the Peace. In his retirement speeches it is clear he was a much loved and considerate administrator.


William Lewis
William Lewis was a Welsh immigrant who established lime lkins in 1880 on an allotment near the corner of Brighton and Shoreham Roads, Adelaide. The area between Marino to Reynella and Hallett Cove were rich in limestone deposits. The works were closed in 1883 due to poor sales but reopened when merged with Adelaide to become Adelaide Brighton Cement in the 1970's. William Lewis can claim to be the first man in Australia to make and sell cement

Colonel William Light

Captain John Lindsay
Captain John Lindsay was born in Scotland in 1818. He was captain of the schooner "Gem", the brig "Europa", "Francis Cadell", "The Packet" and the snag boat "Grappler". He was also appointed to the command of his Excellency Sir James Ferguson's yacht "Edith". Later until the time of his death he was in charge of the South Australian Government steamer "Governor Musgrave". Captain John Lindsay is believed to have built "Captain's Cottage" circa 1860 at Goolwa.

Carl Ferdinand August Linger
Carl Ferdinand August Linger arrived in South Australia from Germany in 1849. He founded and conducted the German Liedertafel in Adelaide and also composed church music. This photograph was reproduced onto the cover of the Adelaide Liedertafel 50th Anniversary Souvenir in 1908. He also played harmonium at St Francis Xavier Cathedral. He won a contest to write music to accompany Caroline Carleton's poem "Song of Australia". He accomplished this within one week.


Mathilde Christiane Linger
Mrs Carl Linger, wife of the musician and composer who created "Song of Australia". Mr Linger was married twice and it is unclear if this photograph is of his first wife Wilhelmine who died of consumption in 1860, or his second wife Christiane Mathilde Cranz whom he married in 1861. After Carl Linger's death in 1862, Mathilde Linger returned to Germany. The photo was donated to the Library in 1949 by Lillian Cranz. It is more likely to be the image of Mathilde Linger and was probably inherited from Lillian's father, August Georg Cranz (brother of Mathilde). According to a researcher, August Georg Cranz was the son, not the brother, of Mathilde Cranz, and according to the birth registration details and Carl Linger's will, Carl Linger and Mathilde Cranz were not married.
