Carl Ferdinand August Linger

Carl Ferdinand August Linger

Carl Ferdinand August Linger arrived in South Australia from Germany in 1849. He founded and conducted the German Liedertafel in Adelaide and also composed church music. This photograph was reproduced onto the cover of the Adelaide Liedertafel 50th Anniversary Souvenir in 1908. He also played harmonium at St Francis Xavier Cathedral. He won a contest to write music to accompany Caroline Carleton's poem "Song of Australia". He accomplished this within one week.

Mathilde Christiane Linger

Mathilde Christiane Linger

Mrs Carl Linger, wife of the musician and composer who created "Song of Australia". Mr Linger was married twice and it is unclear if this photograph is of his first wife Wilhelmine who died of consumption in 1860, or his second wife Christiane Mathilde Cranz whom he married in 1861. After Carl Linger's death in 1862, Mathilde Linger returned to Germany. The photo was donated to the Library in 1949 by Lillian Cranz. It is more likely to be the image of Mathilde Linger and was probably inherited from Lillian's father, August Georg Cranz (brother of Mathilde).
