Sir Samuel Davenport

Sir Samuel Davenport was one of the early settlers and became a landowner and parliamentarian. He was elected to the First Legislative Council in 1857 and promoted agriculture and new industries in South Australia. Lived in Beaumont House where he grew olives and silk worms. This photograph shows Sir Samuel standing in the olive grove at Beaumont.

Sir Samuel Davenport arrived in South Australia in 1843. He and his brother moved to Macclesfield to manage a mixed farm with almonds, vines and sheep. He also had holdings at Rivoli Bay and Talowie near Port Augusta where he ran horses and cattle. He lived at Beaumont and gave land for a common. He cared greatly for his tenants. He is remembered as a cattle and horse breeder, a grazier, a Member of the Upper House and a company director.

Dr. Constance Muriel Davey was educated in South Australia, won the Catherine Helen Spence Scholarship and studied psychology at the University of London. She returned home and took up the position of psychologist at the Education Department of South Australia. She dedicated her life to working with children displaying learning difficulties, including those seen at the Adelaide Children's Hospital and Minda Homes

John Davis, came from India to South Australia and accompanied McKinlay in his expedition across the continent. McKinlay was appointed to the position of leader of an expedition to search for the Burke and Wills party. Mr. Davis volunteered for that expedition, and on his return published "Tracks of McKinlay Across Australia." In April, 1864, Colonel Finniss was appointed Government Resident at the Northern Territory, and was dispatched thither with an expedition to form a new settlement. In this expedition, which is commonly known as the "Escape Cliffs expedition," Mr. Davis joined, and was given the position of assistant storekeeper. On returning to Adelaide he took up a position in the Water Works Department which he retained for 13 years until his death at fifty six years. He left a widow and three daughters.

Edward Davy

Edward Davy was an English physician, scientist and inventor who played a prominent role in the development of telegraphy and invented an electric relay. He was made an honorary member of the Society of Telegraph Engineers in 1885 just before his death. In 1838 he migrated to South Australia with his family and became editor of the Adelaide Examiner. He later became director and manager of the Adelaide Smelting Company and became chief assayer of the Government Assay Office in 1852. In 1853 he moved to Melbourne and practiced as a physician for the rest of his life.

Peter Dawson featured here writing and signing a note at the Savage Club in London. Dawson was born in Adelaide in 1882 to Scottish parents. As a child he attended the East Adelaide Public School and then Pultney Grammar School. He first studied singing under the later C.J. Stevens of Adelaide and then in London, from 1902 to 1906 under Sir Charles Santley. His first Phonograph recording was in 1903, followed by his first Gramaphone record which was released in 1904. A popular and prolific artist, he recorded over 2000 titles for the gramophone. 10 million recordings of his voice had been sold by 1930.
