George Witherage Cotton

George Witherage Cotton 1821-1892 was a carpenter at Willunga, shop owner on Hindmarsh Island, land agent, land reformer, Member of the Upper House (which he entered aged 61), Methodist lay preacher. As a land agent he bought land for Prince Alfred College and was secretary of the school in it's first 20 years. His pamphlet 'Small Holdings, the Mainstay of Individuals and Nations' published in Adelaide in 1888 shows his views on working men's blocks schemes. Another entitled 'The Obligations of a Civil Government' shows his belief in putting people on the land thus providing a comfortable life for them.

Sir William Rooke Creswell was a naval officer and considered to be the "father" of the Royal Australian Navy. After retiring from the Royal Navy in 1878 he emigrated to Australia to become a pastoralist. Later he was convined to take the position of First Lieutenant on South Australia's only naval vessel HMCS "Protector". In 1911 Creswell was promoted to Rear Admiral of the Royal Australian Navy and Vice Admiral in 1922

Joseph Crombie arrived in South Australia in June 1840 on board the ship the "Thirteen" on 31 December 1839. He was a Police Inspector and a publican. He died aged 85 at Sussex Street, North Adelaide in approximately 1899. When he was a Police Inspector he was in charge of the second gold escort from Victoria. Alexander Tolmer, Commissioner of Police organised 18 escorts for the gold transported from the Victorian goldfields to South Australia. This gold was valued at approximately 1.2 million pounds. Joseph Crombie was the publican of the Fountain Hotel at Gilberton during 1854-1859. The Fountain Hotel existed from 1853-1861.

John Crozier M.P was a founding member of the South Australian Jockey Club. He arrived in the colony from New South Wales after he drove his bullock teams loaded with his own wool. He was a station owner along the Murray before settling into his residence called Oaklands near Brighton. He grew wine on his estate and bred horses. He was a 'good colonist'.
