Captain Francis Cadell was born in Scotland and later established steam navigation of the River Murray. He negotiated with the South Australian Government to provide a bonus for the first two iron steamers to travel up the Murray to the Darling Junction. Later he navigated his way down the river onboard the "Lady Augusta", landing at Port Elliot.

Captain Francis Cadell claimed the government bonus for opening up the Murray River. His steamer the "Lady Augusta", commanded by Captain Davidson successfully passed through the breakers at the mouth of the Murray. With Cadell in command his vessel reached a point 2,400 kilometres up the river. Later in his career Cadell became involved in whaling, trading, pearling and slave trading

Sir William Wellington Cairns was acting Governor of South Australia for eight weeks only. He suffered ill health as Governor of Queensland and moved to South Australia to enjoy a cooler climate. He resigned after eight weeks due to insomnia and the long lasting effects of tropical disease. He eventually died in London of bronchitis.

[General description] Reverend Robert A. Caldwell was inducted on 4th August 1864 into a ministery in the Presbyterian Church that was to last for forty five years. He saw the original church in Mount Gambier enlarged once before Saint Andrews was opened on 10th December 1871. Reverend Caldwell was minister until 1909 when ill-health forced him to retire. He died shortly afterwards, his funeral was the largest Mount Gambier had seen, as all respected and admired him. [On back of photograph] Rev. R.A. Caldwell Presbyterian Minister Mt. Gambier. William Bacon Carter was married to Annie and lived at College Town. In 1847 he was a school master in Derbyshire. He was first married to Jane Blakeney in 1851 and later married Annie Northleigh Platts in 1875 at St Michael's Church at Mitcham. He held various positions in the Colonial Secretary's Office including Storekeeper. He died at Semaphore at the age of 77.
