He retired from newspapers after 65 years service. He was one of seven members elected to the Australian House of Representatives in the 1901 election. At that time South Australia was a single electorate with numerous members. He and his wife Marie Louise Frederica Balthasar had eight children and still found time to donate and support many causes in South Australia and Cornwall. He left a legacy of over 4 million pounds.

One of his two daughters Beatrice Mary married Sir Raymond Fitzmaurice in 1919. His only son was killed in action in 1916

Robert William Botting, a carpenter from London (1818-1890). With his brothers Fred and Frank he established a carpentry and joinery business in Adelaide. They helped construct many buildings including the Bank of Australasia. During the Depression he opened a butchery business. He also worked at the Bendigo Gold Fields and farmed on Hindmarsh Island. He moved his family to New Zealand where he opened a successful butchery business and also mined gold. He died in New Zealand in 1890.

Sir James Penn Boucaut, barrister, free trade politician, Member of Lower House, Premier, race horse breeder, stockman, federationist. He migrated with his parents to South Australia in 1846 and worked as a stockman. In 1851 he turned to the law and was presented to the Bar in 1855. While a Member of the House of Assembly he voted to disallow plural votes for property owners. He resigned from government in 1867 to fight the Moonta Mines case which opposed Sir Walter Hughes being granted a mineral lease ahead of his clients. He was made a QC and Supreme Court Judge in 1978. In his retirement he bred Arab horses on his estate at Mount Barker.
