[General description] David Beveridge Adamson and his Newtonian telescope with equatorial mount built in 1886. Mr. Adamson, wearing a fez, is posing on a ladder next to his telescope which is mounted on the roof of his house [On back of photograph] 'Daniel Beveridge Adamson and his telescope / Erected on the roof of his house in Angas Street, near Hanson Street (later absorbed by Simpson's factory) [See letter from H.R. Adamson, October 30th, 1935] / The telescope was made by D.B. Adamson himself, even the grinding and silvering of the big mirror being his work / In 1922 the mounting was used at Cordello Downs for observing the solar eclipse (See note by H.R. Adamson in Newspaper cuttings book, vol. 2, p. 36) / Presented by F.E. Sawtell'.

William James Adey

William James Adey, Director of Education, school teacher, principal and inspector. Nicknamed 'Plugger'. He is remembered for his contribution to the 1931 Committee of Inquiry into cutting costs in public education and included the amalgamation of small primary schools. He opposed the amalgamation of country high schools and insisted the fees be low.

Prince Victor Albert (17 years old) and Prince George(15 years old) during the Royal visit in 1881. They sailed aboard the 'HMS Bacchante' as midshipmen in training. They crossed from Albany, WA to Adelaide on a passenger ship, travelled by land to Melbourne and then on to Sydney by naval vessel. Prince Albert Victor, Duke of Clarence and Avondale (1864-1892) was the eldest son of Albert Edward (later King Edward VII) and grandson of Queen Victoria. He died before his grandmother so never became King. He was engaged to Princess Mary of Teck but when he died of influenza she married his brother George, who became King George V in 1910.

James Allen was a chemist. His chemist shop stood on the corner of Hindley and Morphett Streets. The Hindley Street pharmacist, James Allen (1815-1881), who bought seven acres of land in Thomas Street, Unley in 1851 established there a kitchen garden devoted to the 'useful', and noted in his diary in October 1852, 'Bees swarmed'. In April 1854 he noted, 'Have at length got some honey from the Bees, I suppose about Twenty Pounds' [nearly 10kg]. By early 1856 he had attended Horticultural Society meetings; had a thatched and lime washed bee house built, made an 'unsatisfactory' stand for his bee hives, and also 'put [?mud] mortar on the bee shed'." Edward William Andrews[1812-1877] arrived in South Australia in 1839. He helped found the South Australian Insurance Joint Stock Company and in 1840 founded the firm of Gorton and Andrews. He was a member of several societies including Adelaide City Council, Protection of Religious Freedom, Royal Statistical Society, Mayor of Glenelg, Royal Agricultural and Horticultural Society, Masonic Lodge. He held positions on the "South Australian" newspaper, Adelaide Observer and the Register.

Richard Bullock Andrews

Richard Bullock Andrews, lawyer, arrived in South Australia in 1825 and practiced in Supreme Court until 1853. He began his political career in 1857 but resigned in order to take up position of Crown Solicitor and Public Prosecutor. Became Queen's Counsel in 1865. He planted seventeen acres of vines on his property at Belair whilst realising his wish to become an amateur winemaker.
