[General description] The popular coastal passenger / cargo liner MV 'Moonta' (2,700 tons), when newly built by Burmeister & Wain shipyard in Copenhagen Denmark for the Adelaide Steamship Company. She plied between Adelaide and Port Lincoln with stops at various coastal ports, including Kingscote when necessary. She carried large amounts of cargo, mostly wool, as well as lead, pig iron and groceries. [On back of photograph] 'Motor vessel 'Moonta' (Adelaide Steamship Company) / Added to the Company's fleet towards end of 1931 / Photograph taken in 1931 / Presented by the Adelaide Steamship Company'.

The "Governor Musgrave" with Parliamentary party aboard at the Jetty - 28 August 1905. This iron screw steamer was built in Mort's Dock, Balmain New South Wales in 1874. It was used as a lighthouse tender until 1914 when it was transferred to the Commonwealth Government. The photograph shows the Parliamentary party boarding a tender at Kirton Point one km west of Port Lincoln on 28 August, 1905. The "Governor Musgrave" can be seen moored in the background.

Mission, Poonindie

Mission, Poonindie

Poonindie Mission was established by the Church of England in 1850 and was located near Port Lincoln. It was originally a training institution for young Aboriginal people from various localities. When the lease was surrended in 1894 most of the residents moved to Point Pearce and Point McLeay Mission Stations. The photograph shows a township consisting of St Matthew's Church, buildings and several cottages surrounded by a railing fence.

Old fireplace at Whalers Bay, Thistle Island. Thistle Island was named by Matthew Flinders after John Thistle, master of the" Investigator" who was drowned nearby in 1802. Plentiful numbers of whales were noted in the area. A whaling station was built in 1838 on the island which is located 35 kilometres south east of Port Lincoln. The venture was abandoned in 1839. the photograph shows a gentleman looking at the remains of the limestone fireplace.

[General description] The Old Lake Wangary Hotel, built in 1871, was once a stagecoach station on the West Coast stage-coach run from Port Lincoln. Here it doubles as as a Post and Telegraph Office where two carloads of men have stopped, one of the men appearing to fix a tyre. It ceased to operate as a hotel in 1933. John McDouall Stuart

John McDouall Stuart [duplicate copy at PRG 458/1/2/5]. Copy of an original photograph of J McDouall Stuart while at "Green Patch" Port Lincoln. Stuart had injured his hand and arm. He arrived in South Australia in 1839 and joined a surveying party with Charles Sturt to the centre of the continent. He carried out six expeditions altogether. He reached the Indian Ocean in 1862 after leaving Adelaide in 1861. For this mammouth effort he was awarded the interest only on two thousand pounds and his party had to share one thousand and five hundred pounds between themselves. Later, exhausted and white haired and almost blind, he was awarded a further one thousand pounds but again he only received the interest on the amount. He is remembered as a controversial figure, lonely and independent with a fierce pride and was the most accomplished of all Australia's inland explorers
