The iron barque 'Mallsgate', 1073 tons, in an unidentified port [iron barque, 1073 gross tons. ON63889, 215.3 x 34.1 x 21.0. Built 1877 (5) R Williamson and Son, Harrington. Owners: John Sprott, registered Workington, later Fisher and Sprott. Wrecked on Middleton Reef, off the coast of Australia, 21 July 1889. Thought to have been designed by Captain James sprott, longtime master of the vessel and brother of the first owners, however this is quoted by Lubbock without supporting references. He also makes a series of other statements such as that the vessel was built regardless of cost; was the finest iron barque rigged ship built; carried little cargo, all apparently unsupported. She was wrecked when laden with coal and bound from Newcastle, NSW to San Francisco. 'Last of the Windjammers' Vol. 11 gives a lengthy report on the escape and open boat voyage of the crew].

A fine example of a steel four masted barque--a large carrier yet capable of making good passages [steel 4 mast barque, 2166 tons, ON98300, 279.7 x 42.1 x 24.5. Built 1891 (1) R Duncan and Co. Ltd. Port Glasgow. Owners: Leitch and Muir, registered Greenock. Renamed 'William R Lewis' c.1910 and owned by AP Rolph, registered Greenock. Converted into a barge at Victoria, British Columbia mid 1920s. Reportedly shelled by the enemy in WW1 and left to sink but kept afloat and towed into Bantry Bay. Wool cargo said to have prevented her sinking].

'Strathclyde Shipping Co. Ltd.'].

The iron barque 'East Croft', 1312 tons, in an unidentified port. James Taylor Rimmer was Master of this ship from its launch in July, 1875 until he retired in 1895. It's official number was 63885 and was built by Harland & Wolff in Belfast, Northern Ireland for John Gambles, High Harrington, Workington, Cumberland, England. There were many voyages made to Australia (Melbourne). Believed to have continued to sail under the British flag until 1897 (D. Connack as Master and Trinder, Anderson & Co., as subsequent owners) when it was transferred to Norwegian ownership. [Additional information provided by I. Wilson.] [iron ship, c.1902 became 3 mast barque. 1367 tons. ON63885. 228.0 x 35 5 x 22.3. Built 1875 (6) Harland and Wolff. Belfast. Owners John Gambles registered Workington, later G Graham. Sold in 1902 to Norwegian owner Sigurd Haslum, without change of name. It was transferred to Italian ownership in 1910 where it was broken up]. According to a researcher, the barque was named after the house of owner John Gambles at High Harrington.

Photo album compiled by Spencer Howland, believed to contain a complete photographic record of all the tugs and other vessels built at Adelaide Ship Construction, Port Adelaide between 1957 and 1973. Photos were taken of the vessels on slips, dry docks or when launched. Also included is Spencer Howland's original handwritten list for his numbered album photos showing their destinations or type, together with a typed transcript of the original list by Max Howland. Most of the photos were taken by Spencer Howland. Individual images may be viewed online by doing a number search on B 70981.

Lord Byron's carriage, Port Lincoln [duplicate copy at PRG 458/1/1/107]. The carriage belonged to Lord Byron as the side panels bore the Byron arms and family motto. It belonged to Lady Charlotte Bacon and her family sold it by auction. It is possible that Lord Byron gave it to Lady Charlotte before his death and she consequently brought it to Adelaide. Lady Charlotte and Lord Byron were close friends and it is said that the verses "To Ianthe" were attributed to her.
