Dr. Norton Memorial School, Peterborough
[General description] Saint Joseph's Convent School at Peterborough. A statue of Saint Joseph stands above the door and three crosses stand on the eaves of the steeply pitched roof. A carved plaque above the door says AD 1925. [On back of photograph] Dr. Norton Memorial School at Peterborough. Blessed and Opened by the Right Rev. Dr. Andrew Killian, Bishop of Port Augusta, January 24 1926.


Pioneer "Koch"Cottage
Pioneer "Koch" family cottage at Peterborough. JH Koch was founder of Peterborough (Peterburg). Koch was made manager of the property by Peter Doecke from Kapunda who intended to farm on Section 216 of the Hundred of Yongala. Doecke sold the property to Koch. The Koch hut was originally the home of Doecke. The photograph shows a single storey rendered building festooned with flowering creepers around the door and windows.

Railway yards, Peterborough. Originally it was called Petersburg but was renamed Peterborough in 1917. It was a four way junction station and a round house and turntable added in 1927.

The hotel was built in approximately 1880 at the same time as the post office, followed by the town hall and a school. The town was renamed Peterborough in 1917 from it's original name of Petersburg due to anti-German sentiments during World War I.

Peterborough town hall. This photograph shows the original town hall which was housed in the Institute building. The building was adapted for better use by the addition of a new stage, dressing rooms, library, reading room, council chamber, clerks's office and re-opened in 1894. However by 1925 this too was deemed inadequate so a new Town Hall was commissioned and opened in 1927


Railway Station, Peterborough
Railway Station at Peterborough. This was originally opened in 1880 when a narrow gauge line opened from Port Pirie to the west. In 1881 a line arrived from Terowie. The town sat at the intersection of the East-West railway and the North-South railway. Originally named Petersburg the name was changed to Peterborough in 1917 due to anti-German sentiment during World War I. This photograph shows the many lines running through the station and the station buildings


Railway Yard, Peterborough
Railway yard at Peterborough. A man is standing in front of the railway complex at Peterborough. TheRoundhouse is a large timber-framed structure built in a semicircle. It originally comprised 22 bays. A feature of each bay is the concrete pit used for inspecting and repairing rolling stock. The Roundhouse was built in 1925 as part of the Webb initiative to upgrade the South Australian Railways. It is one of the few surviving roundhouses in the state and certainly the largest. The building has a saw-tooth roof profile and is remarkable for its semi-circular design and construction. The nearby turnatable enabled several rails to cope with three gauges
