Quorn Railway Station

Quorn Railway Station

Quorn Railway Station. Sweet Adelaide 514. Quorn Railway Station opened on 15 December 1879 as the interim terminus of the Central Australian Railway from Port Augusta. In 1881 Quorn became a junction station with the opening of the Peterborough-Quorn railway line. The photograph, taken from a height, shows multiple railway lines, the station and further buildings in the background.

Quorn Railway sheds. The Quorn station opened as a terminus in 1879 on the Central Australia Railway. In 1881 Quorn became a junction station on the Peterborough to Quorn line. The railway goods shed needed to be located on the side nearest to the town. The government claimed the gradient made it impossible to have the goods and passengers sheds on the town side.

View of Teetulpa. Inscription underneath the photograph states 'There was great excitement when, closely following the discovery of silver at Broken Hill, gold was found at Teetulpa in 1886. The extent of the activities of the gold-seekers is shown in this panaramic of the field, which has been kindly paced at our disposal by Mr R Heithersay of Peterborough'. The photograph shows hundreds of white canvas ridge tents spread out in the scrub at Teetulpa.

Ucolta

'House, Store, and Post Office at Ucolta'. A researcher has added that the building on the left is the Ucolta Hall, built in the early 1920s, the building of which was assisted by Heinrich Rasmus who lived in the adjacent house. The hall was knocked down in about 2010 due to it being in a dangerous state. The house too is now rubble. In the early 1900s Ucolta was a thriving place for the local farmers and there was much activity in the area, both social and farming. The road that these buildings were built on was named Rasmus Road in 2009 by Peterborough Council in honour of the family's long history with the area. Ucolta now has erected a war memorial cairn to the several local men who fought and died in the wars.

Yunta Hotel, Yunta is located in the far north of South Australia north east of Peterborough. The Yunta Hotel was established in 1899 and the first proprietor was William Reiken. Yunta came about due to the nearby discovery of gold in 1887.

Victor Herbert Ryan

Victor Herbert Ryan, public servant was born in 1874 near Peterborough and educated in state schools at Burra and Terowie. In 1908 he obtained the post of agent at the newly formed Tourist Bureau. He provided material about South Australia for the agent-general in London. The State War Office directed him to take a train with a band and the Premier around the state to recruit men to become soldiers for the First World War. He arranged Adelaide's peace celebration in 1919 and was appointed an OBE for his efforts. He supervised the British "Barwell Boys" on their indentureship to South Australian farmers. In 1936 he organised South Australia's centenary celebrations. He was a Freemason and Rotarian. In this photograph he is seen using a dictaphone in his office

[General description] The South Australian Cheer-Up Society was founded by Alexandrina Seager, its object being to support the soldiers in the First and Second World Wars and to bring them into contact with the 'highest type of womanhood'. This hut was near the Adelaide Railway Station and had a hostel and canteen. It was funded from various charitable institutions. The room shown here is comfortably furnished with armchairs, chairs and tables and a piano. [On back of photograph] 'Peterborough Wing / Cheer Up Hut, Adelaide / December 24 th., 1919'.

The "Antares" iron ship built in 1888 and wrecked off the south west coast of Victoria in 1914. The ship was sailing from Marseilles to Melbourne via the southern Australian coastline when it came to grief on a rocky outcrop near Peterborough with a loss of all crew. Originally named "Sutleg", renamed "Antares"by Italian owners

Soldier Edward James McMurray, born in Peterborough 24 December 1893. His service numbers were 1326 and 1326A, and he enlisted on 1 December 1914. He died at Gallipoli on 22 May 1915, and was buried at the Lone Pine Memorial.
