Panoramic view of Mt. Gambier probably taken between 1884-86 when John Bagot was MP for the district. Most of the houses have land around them creating a rural scene showing horses, carts and piles of firewood.

Locomotive boiler explosion - Mt. Gambier, railway yards, February 2nd 1914. The tremendous force of the explosion hurled debris across the station. The fireman and driver were hurled from the engine suffering severe shock but no serious injuries.

The clock tower was donated by TC Ellis of Benara Station in 1883. In the foreground on the left stands the verandah of Mac's Hotel which was named after the first licensees, Mr MacDonald and Mr McKenzie. The McKenzie sign can just be seen above the verandah near the ornate lamp post

The potato industry focussed on supplying local markets but later the South East district was supplying large quanties of potatoes by rail to Victoria, New South Wales and Western Australia. The South East of South Australia received a higher rainfall which was suitable for potato production
