Portrait of Master Ian James Pennell, son of Geoffrey Minett Pennell, sitting cross legged in the studio in Mount Gambier in 1945. He is five years old and is wearing a tie and tie pin with his shirt and short trousers. Ian was born in Millicent Hospital on 17 June 1940. His father Geoffrey was born in Kent, England on 18 January 1908 and immigrated to South Australia under the Barwell scheme, introduced by the then South Australian Premier Sir Henry Barwell. At age 16 Geoffrey was a passenger on the SS Benalla sailing out of London on 8 May 1924, and was sent to work on a farm 4 miles north of Millicent, South Australia.
