[General description] Railway lines running along Milang jetty. More than ten steamers are moored at the jetty, one of which is the Avoca. Note the spark catchers fitted to the steamer funnels. Milang is located on the shores of Lake Alexandrina.

Milang jetty and foreshore on a regatta day. The Milang Jetty was built in 1856 and the hand crane was placed here in 1872. It is believed to be the oldest crane of this type in South Australia. This photograph shows the jetty and nearby beaches swarming with people. Various types of boats are tied up at the jetty. The beach is lined with motor cars, buggies, tents and people enjoying the regatta. See PRG 1258/2/1048

Milang Post Office. From 1853 Milang grew into a bustling little port servicing traders on the way up and down the river. The Post Office, Police Station and churches were built at this time. The photograph shows a stone building which housed the Post Office, Telegraph Office, the Commonwealth Bank and the Savings Bank of South Australia. Milang jetty was built in 1856 and was increased in length twice more. The Port of Milang declined in importance after the line to Morgan in 1878 took away the upper Murray trade. This photograph shows three small sailing boats moored at the jetty.

[General description] A group of men, probably staff have assembled under a gumtree in front of A.H. Landseer's store and mill at MIlang. The mill operated from approximately 1870 to 1890, replacing the Pavy flour mill which was established in Milang in the 1850s to supply flour for the riverboat trade. A.H. Landseer was a prominent businessman in the lower Murray district becoming one of the colony's principal river merchants with other flour mills in Morgan and Lake Alexandrina and large woolsheds at Goolwa and Port Victor.

Port Milang, River Murray

Pencil sketch by John Jacob Kopp of 'Port Milang' on the Murray River. According to a researcher, Kopp was the lighthouse keeper at Cape Jaffa at the time of his drawing of Port Milang. The sketch shows a paddle steamer tied up at the wharf, with a ketch on the other side; a boat is under construction on the water's edge on the lower right, with A.H. Landseer's premises in the centre middle ground. Other substantial buildings are adjacent to this, with residential buildings depicted to either side.
