Grenfell Street, Adelaide, south side, looking west from Gawler Place. The Advertiser premises, third building from left, has not yet removed to King william Street. A portion of the one storey building on the east side of Register Building (on the right with the tower) was demolished by 1865 (see B 5099). The fourth building from the left was erected in 1863. On the extreme left is Commercial Place, named after the Commercial Inn on its corner.

Grenfell Street near Commercial Place
Grenfell Street, south side, frontage of Paper & Bag Co. is 10 yards and frontage of Goode, Durrant's is 16.5 yards. On the right is Commercial Place and on the left is Gawler Place.The four storey building is the warehouse for Goode, Durrant and Company Limited. Sir Charles Henry Goode (26 May 1827 - 5 February 1922) was a merchant, businessman, politician and philanthropist in the early days South Australia. He founded Goode, Durrant and Company in 1882. The smaller two storey building next door houses the SA Paper and Bag Company and also importer, indentors and manufacturers agent ARB Lucas and Company.

The left side of remodelled building with cantilever verandah is 14 yards west of Gawler Place. Many cars are parked at the kerbside and pedestrians and a bicycle are passing.

Grenfell Street, south side, 29th May 1964, frontage of building is 28.5 yards. Right side of the building abuts Gawler Place. Left side of the building abuts French Street. The building is named "ES Wigg and Sons Ltd", established in 1849. In 1921 ES Wigg and Son moved from Rundle Street to 65-69 Gremfell Street on the Coromandell Place corner. The successful book and stationery shop was founded after Edgar Wigg emigrated to Adelaide in 1849

Hyde Street, east side, October 31st 1901, left side of Y.W.C.A. is 30 yards south of Grenfell Street and frontage is 13.5 yards. The Young Women Christian Association founded in 1900 owns this two storey red brick building dedicated to Lady Colton.

North east corner of Pirie Street and Gawler Place, Adelaide. Extreme left of photo is 30 yards north of Pirie Street, extreme right is on west corner of Coromandel Place. This is one of the Onslow Buildings, recently completed. See B 2505 for the other one, situated on the east side of Coromandel Place.

Pirie Street, Adelaide, north side, east corner of Gawler Place, on a wet May 22nd, 1923. The verandah on the extreme left was removed a few weeks later, and the portion of the building occupied by the National Bank (on the very corner) was faced with stucco.

[General description] This three storey building dating from the 1880s was originally known as Onslow Buildings. The part of the building on the left with the rendered facade is the premises of the National Bank of Australasia. The ground floor of the near end of the building consists of small shops with the Quick Lunch Cafe on the Coromandel Place corner. There appears to be 'for sale' notices on the facade. Selborne Hotel, Pirie Street
Selborne Hotel, Pirie Street, north side, November 25th 1935, right side of hotel is 36 yards west of Gawler Place and frontage is 16.5 yards. The Selborne Hotel was an early meeting place for the United Trades and Labor Council. On 13 June 1890 Mrs Milne, Mrs Reuin and Miss Vincent were welcomed as delegates representing the newly formed Working Women's Trades Union. For alterations made to the Selborne Hotel in 1936 see B 6944. At the time of this photograph the proprietor of the hotel was TF Dollard.


McHenry Street
McHenry Street, north side, March 24th 1937, right side of Goode Durrant & Murray's premises is 23 yards west of Gawler Place and frontage is 17 yards. Goode Durrant and Murray's building was erected in 1936. Compare with B 6831. The three storey building has bars on the windows on the ground and first floors. Cars and motor bikes are parked in the street.

Pirie Street, north side, March 24th 1937, right side of hotel is 36 yards west of Gawler Place and frontage is 16.5 yards. Major alterations were made in 1936. Compare photograph with B 6735. At the time of this photograph the Hotel Adelaide at 44 Pirie Street was managed by PW O'Neil. The hotel that previously stood on this site was known as the Selborne Hotel which was in operation from 1887 -1936. This photograph was taken on the opening day 24 March 1936 and it was finally closed 25 April 1970.
