Kitchen in the restored Rumblelow Cottage, Victor Harbor. The Rumbelow family arrived in Port Adelaide in 1854 aboard the "Bomanjee". The family started a long relationship with fishing and the boating life and became one of the chief institutions of Encounter Bay. The Rumbelow family residence in Franklin Parade was called "Yilki".

Fisherman's Anchorage, Wallaroo. Wallaroo began as a landing beach for the export of wool from the local pastoralists. After the landing stage was built to facilitate shipping of copper the fishermen used the beach as a safe anchorage. Richard Jagoe

Richard Jagoe

Richard Jagoe, shipping reporter, quarantine officer and launch fleet operator was born in Cornwall in 1833. He died at his residence 'Rhiador,' 68 Esplanade, Semaphore in 1899. He was good natured and a friendly gentleman. He was also a health inspector for the Department of Health, Inspector of Fish, Justice of the Peace. He could trace his family back to Jahn de Trejago in the time of Edward VI. He was proprietor of a fleet of beach boats which he had adapted by his own design to ferry goods, passengers and news from boats in the Semaphore Anchorage. He was known as the 'Sandhill Savage' because he originally lived among the sand dunes and could clearly see approaching ships carrying the latest news which he would speedily exchange for local news.

Mrs Emily James, wife of the Hon. David James with two of her children Alice and Edmund Rees. According to a researcher, the photograph was taken in Abergavenny, Wales when the family went there to visit Emily's father and family in 1889-90. Their youngest child, Emily Louise had not been born at this time, so does not appear in the photo. The photographer, J. Clare, operated a business that not only provided photographic services, but was also a fishing tackle shop.

Cain Jelliff and Alice Rumbelow. The Rumbelows were a boating and fishing family residing in Victor Harbor. Cain Jelliff died in 1877, eight months before his nephew Cain Rumbelow was born. During the 112 day voyage to Australia it seems likely there was an onboard romance, for one of the sailors, Cain Jelliff, accompanied the family to Encounter Bay. Shortly after arriving in their new home their eldest daughter Alice married young seaman Cain Jelliff in the Encounter Bay Tabernacle Church.

Malen and Alice Rumbelow who arrived at Port Adelaide from England on 5 October 1854 and settled at Encounter Bay in January 1855 with their nine children. The Rumbelows were a boating and fishing family residing at Victor Harbor.

Malen and Mary Rumbelow. Malen was the second son of Malen and Alice Rumbelow who arrived from England with his parents in 1854 aged 8 years. He died in 1905 aged 59. See also B45752. Their children included Alice, Godfrey, Jane, Cain, Rose, Malen junior, Henry, Grace. They were a fishing and boating family.

A researcher provided the following information: Cain Rumbelow would have been named after his uncle, Cain Jelliff, the husband of Alice Rumbelow, who died in 1877, eight months before Cain Rumbelow was born.

Hindley Street north side. The Eagle Hotel can be seen on the extreme left of the photograph. This hotel existed from 1846 - 1978. Ross George Samuel Fuller was the proprietor of the hotel at the time of this photograph. Also seen are E Martin's Tailor and Shirt Shop and Morris Cafe serving their speciality of fish and grills.

For a view of building after alteration see B 14185. At the time of this photograph the centre building housed a butchers, hairdressers, fishing tackle shop, cafe, and a dry cleaners. To the east stood Charlicks Store and to the west stood the building established by AA Brice 1887

An electric tram stopped outside the 'temporary offices of The Register' newspaper in Grenfell Street, Adelaide. The electric tramway was inaugurated on 9 March 1909. The 'Pioneer Wine Saloon' had its licence refused in March 1909 and by June 1909 The Imperial Fish, Grill, & Oyster Saloon was established at that location.
