Finnis Vale Hotel

Finnis Vale Hotel

[General description] This two storey hotel was erected in 1851and first licenced as the Farmer's Arms in 1856, then re-named the Farrier's Arms in 1857-8. From 1859 it was known as the Finnis Vale Hotel. The licensee was R.P. Owens in 1928 when it burned down and the licence was transferred (as below). The building is thought to have been insured. Licence transferred to Hotel Victor, Victor Harbour in 1927 / Destroyed by fire in 1928'.

John Davis, came from India to South Australia and accompanied McKinlay in his expedition across the continent. McKinlay was appointed to the position of leader of an expedition to search for the Burke and Wills party. Mr. Davis volunteered for that expedition, and on his return published "Tracks of McKinlay Across Australia." In April, 1864, Colonel Finniss was appointed Government Resident at the Northern Territory, and was dispatched thither with an expedition to form a new settlement. In this expedition, which is commonly known as the "Escape Cliffs expedition," Mr. Davis joined, and was given the position of assistant storekeeper. On returning to Adelaide he took up a position in the Water Works Department which he retained for 13 years until his death at fifty six years. He left a widow and three daughters.

Frederick Hansborough Dutton

Frederick Hansborough Dutton, founder of Anlaby was the third son of Frederick Hugh Hampton Dutton. Son Frederick (1812-1890) took up a sheep run which had been founded by Captain John Finniss and named it Anlaby. As well as being a grazier he was a Member of the Upper House, mining investor, overlander and sheep breeder. He invested in copper and later left Anlaby, which was the oldest stud sheep station in South Australia, to his nephew Henry Dutton

Billy Kite

Billy Kite

Aboriginal boy Billy Kite was found at Muccumba Station and adopted by Stephen and Matilda Kite from Farina, who sent him to Port Augusta to be educated. He became the best stockman in the far north-west. His twin sister Naraldia married a Mr Warren from Finniss Spring near Maree. [From information provided.]

William Pearson

William Pearson

William Pearson was a surveyor with the Lands Title Office. After arriving from England in 1849 he accompanied BT Finniss to the Northern Territory. Later he surveyed the border between NSW and SA camping at what was later to be named Broken Hill. He retired from the Lands Title Office in 1902 as he was over 70 years of age. He died aged 76.

Robert George Thomas

Robert George Thomas was among the first colonists to arrive in South Australia. At only sixteen years of age he arrived onboard the "Cygnet" with Deputy Surveyor George Strickland Kingston. He worked with both Kingston and the firm of Light Finniss. After returning to Britain and designing many large public and private buildings he returned to South Australia and designed many prominent buildings around Adelaide.

The milk vendor

The milk vendor

Bill Flett and Ruby delivering milk to Mount Gambier residents. The Flett brothers, Bill, Ross and Ralph, delivered milk with Ruby during the 1940s and 1950s. The milk was scooped from the large milk cans into billies left out the front of the house. Ruby knew the delivery route and when to stop.

Stephen King : SUMMARY RECORD

Papers of Stephen King junior, surveyor, member of the John McDouall Stuart Expedition, comprising sketches, photographic cartes, correspondence, testimonials and newspaper cuttings relating to the Expedition, diaries and field books of surveys in the Northern Territory, Overland Telegraph and South East, papers of J.W. Billiatt relating to an English colony in Paraguay, and postcard letters to his grandson Tom King, son of Freer Barnes King, and F.B. King's wife Isabella, nee Macdonald from female relatives. Item 275, Stephen King's 4-part panorama sketches 'The Great Exploring Expedition on the march from Chambers Creek January 8th 1862' has been digitised as No. 39/1-4 of a collection of Stephen King drawings of the expedition. See B 486/1-45 in the South Australiana Database. A later donation of items collected by Miss Shirley Cameron Wilson and donated by her executors after her death in 2003 is arranged and described as items 338-519 as an addendum to the original item listing of 1994. They relate to Stephen King junior, his parents and his brother-in-law John William Billiatt and their families over several generations. Includes the journal of the Billiatts' return trip to England on the 'Coonatto' in 1863-64. Photographs have not been listed individually but arranged in groups from item 471-480. Copies have been made and originals placed in Reserve collection. Other photographs relating to the Billiatt and King families have been digitised and available to view: see separate records for PRG 627/501 and PRG 627/511 on the catalogue. Cadastral map of the 'District of Adelaide' with Adelaide, North Adelaide and surrounding parklands, Port Adelaide, Holdfast Bay and Glenelg down to the area just south of Marino, the rivers of the Adelaide plains and Port River, and the foothills of the Mount Lofty Ranges shown. The land sections are all numbered and those held by the South Australian Company coloured in green. Areas within the town grids for Adelaide and North Adelaide have been coloured in red. The map gives a clear indication of the extent of vegetation in 1838 across the Adelaide district. Scale 2 inches to 1 mile. Hand drawn map based on the survey by Light, Finniss & Co., with their company's name and the date October 1838 written in ink, at bottom centre of map. (This map came from the London office of the South Australian Company. It appears to predate the maps of the same area published in London by John Arrowsmith from February 1839 onwards).

According to a researcher, William Joseph Maidment was the second of three sons and the sixth of nine children of Charles and Esther (Doel) Maidment. He was born 8 February 1835 in Westbury, Wiltshire.
