Hon. Boyle Travers Finniss arrived in South Australia in September 1836 on board the ship the "Cygnet". Surveyor, police commissioner, Member of Parliament, first Premier of South Australia.

Finniss was appointed first Government Resident in the Northern Territory and tasked with establishing the capital city at a site suitable for a town and a port with good accessibility to the hinterland. At this stage Finniss was 57 with only 10 years experience in the army and only 4 years as a surveyor. Surveyor John Manton was second in command of a complement of 40 men. Upon arrival they proclaimed a colony around a barrel of beer in a tent

[General description] This cottage stood on a block between Melbourne Street and Finniss Street where George Stevenson grew wine grapes in 1837, one of South Australia's earliest vineyards. It nestles behind a brush fence and tall trees. See B 13187 for a different view. The album may have belonged to members of the Mitchell family.

[General Description] A row of three cottages in Finniss Street in North Adelaide. They share a sandstone and brick frontage and a picket fence in this tree lined street. [On back of photograph] Acres 962 & 961 Finniss Street, south side. Nov. 18, 1925. Left side of cottages in centre of photograph is one yard west of Leader Place. Frontage of cottages: 17 yards. Alterations were effected in 1926 in the cottages: windows altered and central latticed gable removed.

Finnis River Bridge

The original bridge over the Finnis River built in 1866, which a researcher has stated was originally named Willow Bridge. The structure was destroyed by bush fire in 1881, and was replaced by a steel girder bridge, although it is now in another location.

The British Hotel in Finniss Street, North Adelaide, north side, 5 November 1941. Near side of the hotel is 76 yards south of Edith Place and frontage is 15 yards. The hotel was built in 1883 on the site of the British Tavern which existed since 1837. John Lawrence Keane was the proprietor of the British Hotel at the time of this photograph.
