S.A. Northern Pioneers 1850-59 : John Watherston

John Watherston, 1833?-1893, arrived in South Australia in June 1839 on board the ship the "Hooghly". Station manager, Leigh Creek and Finniss Springs stations; boarding-house keeper, Port Lincoln.

Anlaby Homestead

[General description] This is the homestead at Anlaby Station, Kapunda, taken from some way off to fit in the house and outbuildings. Set among gum trees on the left is the main house with the family gathered on the verandah for the photographer (hard to make out because of the distance). Other station buildings are nearby. Anlaby was settled in 1839 by John Finniss and acquired by Frederick Dutton in 1841.

A church and school were built and later closed and the town Institute was built in 1913. Goolwa became the more popular town as Currency Creek went into decline

Currency Creek is located between the mouth of the Finniss River and Currency Creek. By 1885 Currency Creek had just 13 houses, 130 residents and a few public buildings. A church and school were built and later closed and the town Institute was built in 1913. Goolwa became the more popular town as Currency Creek went into decline. Currency Creek Inn was established in 1842 as a two storey Georgian style building but was only legally licensed from 1858

Escape Cliffs, Northern Territory

Lithographic print depicting the settlement at Escape Cliffs in the Northern Territory. B.T.Finniss led an expedition which arrived there in 1864. Printed text beneath the image reads 'Escape Cliffs, Northern Territory', while the number '17' is written in the top right corner. Includes a photograph of the same image although believed to be a proof print, with the words 'Printed by W.Newport, Adelaide', a lithographer who worked in SA in the 1860s, beneath the image. The print depicts a scene set above low cliffs. A campsite of tents and some huts have been set under the trees. A few people can be seen walking around the campsite. Two pandanus trees lying at an angle can be seen in the foreground.
