Boot Shop, Port Elliot

Boot Shop, Port Elliot

D. Golding's boot shop, Port Elliot. The proprietor and his family and workers are standing outside the Port Elliot Boot Makers. The building stands alone with sapling fences either side. One side of the shop is possibly the Golding house. David Golding was born in Cambridge, England, and departed Plymouth on Friday 1 July 1853 and arrived in Port Adelaide, South Australia on Wednesday 12 October 1853 on board the 'Standard', along with his brother Stephen. He settled in Port Elliot and established a business as a bootmaker and in 1857 married Mary Ann Barker; together they had seven children. The family journeyed north and established a farm and later a general store at Laura, South Australia. Mary Ann Golding died in 1890, aged 62 years, and David Golding died in 1903, aged 73 years, and left one daughter living, Mrs J. Bowering of Petersburg, along with six grandchildren. The following information was provided by a family member: David Golding was born with a deformed foot so he learnt how to make boots so he could have shoes to fit himself. He later moved to Laura when his wife developed tuberculosis, the doctor advising they move to a drier climate. A few of their children died during the trip north. The young boy on the right may be David's son David Laurence Golding.
